The Wind Blows In Sleeping Grass by Katie Powner

Pearls Of Great Price

The Wind Blows In Sleeping Grass by Katie Powner is the most beautiful Christian contemporary novel about family, friendship and forgiveness.

All the characters are realistically drawn. They are an eclectic mix from an eleven year old boy to an eighty two year old woman. They all have things in common – they are all perfectly flawed human beings in need of a Savior and in need of forgiveness.

Everyone has a past. We all carry burdens that were not meant for us – whether we are eleven or eighty two. God wants us to give Him our burdens. He wants to exchange them for peace, hope and forgiveness. Often, we are our harshest critics. We need to receive His forgiveness and live in His peace.

Life is hard. Life without knowing God is even harder. We can receive His peace despite our circumstances. “When you have that [peace]… it’s enough. But without it, nothing is ever enough.” We cannot earn God’s peace. It is His gift to us.

We meet a troubled eleven year old and a troubled fifty year old who used to be a troubled eleven year old. Despite the age difference, both are very similar. They have both listened to the voices that have told them that they are worthless. They have believed the voices and repeated the mantra to the face in the mirror. God says they are loved. “Everything God makes has value, whether we choose to see it or not.”

She’s Not Sorry by Mary Kubica

Wow – Gripping

She’s Not Sorry by Mary Kubica is an absolutely gripping contemporary psychological thriller that had my pulse and heartrate pounding throughout. It was suspense out of the top drawer.

There is the question as to how well do we know anyone? There are secrets within that have been well hidden – unburdening oneself will have far reaching consequences.

We see the loneliness of single parenting. Everyone needs a friend with whom they can share experiences. It makes life less lonely.

There is a realistically portrayed mother-daughter bond. Life is not always rosy with a teen but love is strong.

The action is written in the first person enabling the reader to share the highs and lows of life with the lead character. We ‘experience’ what she experiences which gives us a roller coaster ride of emotions.

The Songs We Hide by Connie Hampton Connally

Serene Beauty

The Songs We Hide by Connie Hampton Connally is a powerful, heart wrenching historical novel that I read mainly in one sitting.

The novel is set in Hungary in 1951. It is a time of great heartache and difficulty. Communism, under Stalin, had taken over the country following the second World War.

Farming is now organized into collectives. Those who did not join were heavily penalized. There was much cruelty. Just as in Ukraine during the 1920’s, people are killed, persecuted or just disappear.

Life is equally hard in towns. People inform on others. People who are loyal to the state are rewarded. People who are not, are punished.

Throughout the novel, there is the air of fear. No one must openly criticize the state, not even children.

Maid Of Steel by Kate Baker

Happy One Year Anniversary Of Publication

Maid Of Steel by Kate Baker is a fabulous historical novel that I just could not put down.

The action is set in 1911 moving from New York to Queensland in Ireland. Immediately my heart was in my mouth as I read that the maiden voyage of a brand new ship was planned for April 1912. I read with ever increasing heart-rate as the dreaded date approached. Which way would the action go? You will have to read it to find out!

The main theme was women’s suffrage. We witness the strength needed by the women in order to pursue this course. They were treated abominably by the forces of law and order.

Another theme is that of survivor’s guilt. A character is wracked by guilt of actions done and not done. We can never change the past, all we can do is to learn from it. “Life is about what’s coming, not what’s been.”

PTSD in soldiers and sailors is also addressed. Homes are set up to offer comfort and care for those damaged by the forces.
