Marvellous Dual Timeline

The Cornish Witch by Elena Collins is a marvellous dual timeline novel that consumed me from the start.

The action is set in 1625 and present day in a Cornish fishing village. A modern-day inn is at the centre of the action.

Tragic events in 1625 means that there are lost souls unable to rest. These spirits cause havoc in present day as they want everyone to suffer as they did. Present day owners of the inn are losing trade due to the restless spirits.

In 1625 there are women accused of being witches. They are in fact midwives with knowledge of herbs and plants. Locals believe they are causing mischief.

In present day there are a mother and daughter who run a new age shop in Minehead who also believe in the healing power of plants.

A shipwreck on the sea bed has lain there undiscovered for four centuries until a pair of divers come along. The Cornish coast is littered with wrecks as smugglers used to lure ships to their doom.

The Black Rock Killings by Wes Markin

Choices

The Black Rock Killings by Wes Markin is a fabulous contemporary crime novel that had me glued from the start. It is the sixth book in The Yorkshire Murders series but can be read as a stand-alone.

I enjoyed catching up with familiar faces – both heroes and villains. I would recommend reading the previous books first as there is a crime thread running throughout the series as well as new crimes to solve.

We drop in on a familiar face recovering from major surgery in hospital. We ‘hear’ his thoughts while unconscious as he walks amid the ghosts of his life. Will he succumb to all that he has lost? Or is life worth a second shot?

The lead detective, though incredibly dedicated and good at her job, finds her personal life is complicated. Her emotions are torn as we watch her battle internally.

Beneath the surface bubbles a love that the reader has followed throughout the series. We have been aware that the two characters love each other, even though they have never admitted it, not even to themselves. Will they ever speak up and say the words ‘I love you’?

Coming Home

The House Of Second Chances by Lauren Westwood is a compelling contemporary novel that consumed me from the start.

The action is set is in present day and also dipping into 1952 via notes and letters. Everything comes alive due to the comprehensive descriptions from the author.

An old house, crumbling and decrepit takes centre stage. It needs someone to lovingly restore it, and not a local developer to tear it down. Can anyone rescue it from the developer’s clutches?

Within the walls lie secrets. The past echoes all around. Hearts that have hardened need awakening to new possibilities.

All the characters were well drawn and believable. A young estate agent’s passion for literature and the stories of old houses, was enthusiastic and infectious.

Waiting For Kintsugi

The House Of Light And Shadows by Lauren Westwood is a powerful contemporary novel that consumed me from the start.

The novel is set in two time periods – present day and the late nineteenth century as we ‘hear’ via a voice in the past what has happened.

An old house links the two time periods, as does a character trapped in time and space. The past is gone but lives on in hearts full of guilt and regret.

In both time periods there are estranged sisters. Words spoken in hurt and anger have done irreparable damage. Characters need to put aside their differences and unite in love before it is too late.

A character is re-living the past, preventing her from living in the present. “The past can’t be recovered… But don’t lose any more time. Stop hurting and start living.”

A phone call out of the blue offers a second chance – but is it too little, too late?
