We Are Not Like Them by Christine Pride And Jo Piazza

So Powerful

We Are Not Like Them by Christine Pride and Jo Piazza is a powerful and heartbreaking contemporary story. If you only read one book this year – make sure it is We Are Not Like Them.

This is a book about friendship. This is a book about lives. This is a book about racial injustice. It is racial injustice that African Americans face every day of their lives. It is heartbreaking and it needs to change.

The book is about a friendship between two girls who grew up together – one black and one white. They were inseparable. “Sometimes you just need to be around someone who loved you before you were a fully formed person.” Their friendship is strong – until the day it is tested to the limits.

Being a young black man in America is dangerous. The novel explores the horrors that are faced daily.

The opening of the novel is shocking and heartbreaking. It sets the tone for what is to come.

It is awful to see people still being judged by the colour of their skin. “My good grades don’t matter… how faithful I was, how kind, none of it could ever erase the fact that people were going to hate me.” This is wrong. This has always been wrong. When will we learn to love people for who they are?

The authors reinforce the message that racial prejudice has never gone away as we hear of a terrible lynching fifty years earlier. “They just keep killing us” is a heartbreaking cry of a grandmother.

The Postman’s Lantern by J.C. Comerford

Better Together

The Postman’s Lantern by J.C Comerford is a timeless Christmas tale that will warm your heart and leave you smiling.

We witness the need we have for each other. If someone is in trouble, we need to stand together and work together. Together we are stronger.

A father’s love for his children is fierce. There are no lengths he will not go to in order to protect. This is a motif for God, our Father, who comes to our aid when we cry out to Him.

We need to focus on the light. It is the light that will guide us home. Jesus is the Light of the World. We need to keep our focus on Him.

The Heart Of Christmas by Various

Wonderful Offerings

The Heart Of Christmas is a Mosaic Collection of six stories just perfect for the Christmas season. It is the third Christmas collection and all the stories are unique, delightful, contemporary and by Christian authors.

The stories are warm and welcoming, each uniquely written. They are similar but different as they spread the love of Jesus.

I absolutely loved this collection. I must confess I did have a favourite. See if you do too.

Broken Noel by Brenda Anderson is a charming and heartfelt story about a journey through grief and the true meaning of Christmas.

Hetty by Claire Gathercole

Love, Life And Loss

Hetty by Claire Gathercole is a powerful historical novel dealing with love and loss and life. It is set from World War II to the mid 1960’s. It totally consumed me from the start.  Hetty is based on a real-life dilemma from World War II.

The characters are well drawn and realistic, eliciting a variety of responses from the reader.

Much of the action is set in and around Wells in Somerset. It is a place I know well. Familiar landscapes enhanced my reading experience.

Life during Word War II was very different from life in peacetime. Life had to be grabbed wherever happiness could be found. There was no guarantee of tomorrow. The result was that hastily arranged marriages were not always happy places to be after the war when true characters were revealed.

Despite this, love pervades the whole novel. There is a love that neither time nor distance can kill. And there is a great love for one’s children. Love is what remains when the last page is read.
