Delia And The Drifter by Melody Carlson

Inheritance

Delia And The Drifter by Melody Carlson is a marvellous Christian historical novel and the first in the Westward To Home series.

The novel concerns family, inheritance and wealth. Family is more than just blood ties, family is those who love and care for us. Sometimes family casts us off, this is in direct contrast to our heavenly Father who has promised to never leave us nor forsake us.

Inheritance is more than just money. Inheritance is family traits passed down to us such as kindness and character. The richest person is not the one with the biggest bank balance but the one with the kindest heart.

We need to have correct priorities. “There’s more to life than gaining wealth.” Pursuing wealth to the exclusion of all else will often lead to a downfall in a character.

Taking Chances by Melody Carlson

Instruments Of Grace

Taking Chances by Melody Carlson is a perfect contemporary Christian novel for girls aged nine and over. It is the fourth book in the Being Zoey series.

I am considerably older than the target market but am enjoying the series. There are godly lessons for us all to learn, no matter how old we are.

This book focuses on Jesus’ commands to love our enemies, and forgiveness and grace. Eleven year old Zoey faces a girl who bullied her in a previous book and declares “I’m hit with the challenge to love my enemies.” We may find that if we pray for our enemies. It is us who experience a heart change.

Turning Tide by Melody Carlson

Endings And Beginnings

Turning Tide by Melody Carlson is a marvellous Christian historical novel and part of the Legacy Of Sunset Cove series. It can be read as a stand-alone but I would recommend reading the previous novels first.

The action is set in 1917 as America is entering World War I. I enjoyed catching up with familiar faces. Some characters are already at the Front, others are draft dodgers and others are excluded from serving but wish this were not the case. “It’s just hard to stand by and watch.”

Women on the home front do what they can to support the war effort including selling liberty bonds.

The men suffer at the Front. The women suffer on the home front as they worry about their men. They need to entrust their worries to God. “It’s better to pray than to worry.” The reader is reminded that we are to worry about nothing and to pray about everything, only by trusting God will receive a supernatural peace in spite of circumstances.
