Forgotten: The Memoirs Of Sister Margaret by Kimberly Morrison

A Guiding Light

Forgotten: Memoirs Of Sister Margaret by Kimberly Morrison is a powerful Christian dual timeline novel. It is the sixth book in the Created With Purpose series but can be read as a stand-alone.

The action is set in present day and looking backwards over a life in the form of a memoir. The chapters alternate between the time periods and are in the third person (present day) and the first person (memoir).

This is a powerful, and at times, a hard and heartbreaking read. I was very shocked at the events an eight year old endured, but life is not always nice, and awful, unspeakable things happen to the innocent. The response of those who are supposed to love and protect shocked me too. The innocent had no voice.

We see that life can make you bitter or better. We all have the choice as to how to respond to our circumstances. We follow a life that chooses to see good, do good and to follow God. This life faced a crossroads – be angry at God for allowing terrible events or choose forgiveness and press into the only One who could save her.

There is also the difficult topic of dementia. It is a cruel condition that robs us of our loved one’s bit by bit. Once again there is a choice as to how to respond – become angry and focus on what is lost, or remember with love.

Voices Of Cancer by Lynda Wolters

Inspiring & Very Wise

Voices Of Cancer by Lynda Wolters is a powerful, inspiring and very wise book. It is part memoir as the author writes of her own cancer journey and what she has learned along the way. She includes wisdom from the fellow cancer patients that she meets.

This book spoke to my heart as my husband embarked on his cancer journey in 2022. Much of what Lynda Wolters wrote resonated with me. I recognized myself in the author’s husband. As a spouse you feel totally helpless. This is not something you can fix or even do anything about. You are a passenger on the journey that neither of us signed up for. As Lynda Wolters says “It’s not your job to fix me.”

We learn that we all go through a process of grief when we hear the word ‘cancer.’ “Denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance… It is a process.” I spent a long time at the denial stage, believing (wrongly) that if I didn’t name it, it wasn’t happening.

Lynda Wolters tells us “No cancer is easy.” I got particularly upset when my brother dismissed my husband’s cancer as the one that everyone got and it was a good cancer to have as he knew many people who’d had it (prostate cancer). It was neither ‘good’ nor ‘easy’. The author says that we do not need people around us who give empty, positive platitudes. We need people around us who will be ‘real’ with us, who will walk beside us and who will offer support whatever that looks like to us. Everyone is unique.

The author says “everything changes with cancer” and “cancer can change your body… but it can’t have your spirit.” Taking possession of our spirit gives a semblance of control. Life does and will change. It’s inevitable. It can even change for the better. We drew even closer together as we realized that life is fragile.

There are those who step up and offer “little acts of kindness and love… are huge and perhaps lifesaving.” We meet human angels and fur angels along the way. You cannot put a price on the random acts of kindness.

Take Me Home by Beth Moran

Learning To Live Again

Take Me Home by Beth Moran is a delightful contemporary novel that warmed my heart and made me smile.

The novel is about friendship and love. The fragrance of love wafts over the whole novel. It is a love between friends that brings out the best in each other. It is a love that looks for goodness. It is a love that builds up and doesn’t tear down. It is a love that gives strength and encouragement to others, helping them to live abundantly free.

A character is suffering from a trauma that has held her captive for years. She has hidden from the world, never getting close to anyone for fear that they would leave. A locked-up heart is free from new hurts but cocooned in old pain. The locks need to be severed and a character needs to learn to take a chance on love and begin to live again.

We see the hurt that so-called family members inflicted on a life – literally and figuratively locking a character up and damaging her for decades.

We see a love that does not die. The years pass but the love remains.

Singles & Spice by Elaine Spires

Vibrant, Colourful, Fun

Singles And Spice by Elaine Spires is a delightful contemporary novel. It is the second book in the Singles series but can be read as a stand-alone.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time as I joined the characters on a package tour to India. Elaine Spires writes with passion, knowledge and enthusiasm as the sights and sounds of India came to life. I could almost ‘see’ the vibrancy of the colours, ‘smell’ the spices and ‘feel’ the heat. My senses were assaulted in a good way.

All the characters were well drawn and realistic. They were an eclectic mix of various ages, mainly over the age of fifty, and varying personalities. There were both seasoned travelers and newbies.

We witness the patience needed to be a tour guide as well as the ability to deal with all sorts of problems.
