Missing Mercy by Stephenia H McGee

His Love And Loyalty

Missing Mercy by Stephenia McGee is a marvellous Christian historical novel set in 1887. It is the dawn of a new era for some but for others they are still seen as second class citizens. Women and people of colour have to fight to be heard.

Within the story there are two feisty females – one white and one black. They are both strong women with dreams to break into a man’s world. They are also friends.

The novel deals with the issue of race and segregation. There is a myth that the North is more accepting. “It’s different up north… They [Negroes] don’t have to hide up there.” In reality there is still a long way to go and nearly a hundred years before African Americans will be accepted. It is hoped that “Our children… see their God-given souls and not… their skin tone.”

God’s plans are so much greater than ours. If we stubbornly choose our path instead of His, it will take longer to get to our destination. “Despite all the terrible choices she’d made, God had kept her in His hand.” God will never abandon us. He will respect our choices but that does not mean He will let go His hold of us.

Eternity Between Us by Stephenia H McGee

The Search

Eternity Between Us by Stephenia H McGee is a fabulous Christian novel set in 1861 during the American Civil War. The action is a mixture of fact and fiction and keeps the reader entertained. I read the book in just one sitting as I could not put it down.

War is fought under many guises – the abolition of slavery, taxes, political gain- but the sad truth is, everyone loses. How can a country become so divided as to fight its own? Families were torn apart as sides were chosen. Hospitals were set up to tend the wounded from each particular side. “Shed the colour of their coat and they were the same underneath.” Some medical personnel chose to heal from just one side. Others chose to heal all men.

Give Me Thine Heart by Andrea Boeshaar is set in 1814 at the height of the conflict between Britain and America. Caught up in the world of spies, the reader is enthralled with the exploits on the high seas. People are motivated by either God or money. Hearts that serve others are to be applauded. amusing dialogue entertains the reader. A great story to kick off the collection.

In His Eyes by Stephenia H McGee

Perfect Love

In His Eyes by Stephenia H McGee is a delightful historical Christian romance which I really loved. Set in 1865 in the aftermath of the American Civil War, Stephenia McGee explores the complex relationships that arise.

War has left the nation reeling – homes gone, men dead, people displaced, a world in turmoil. “War made men do things they would never have thought to do.” Everyone is now trying to survive. Unlikely friendships develop as people help each other out.

God is present throughout the novel. He brings hope through His Word (the Bible). People can draw close to God by knowing His Word and knowing The Author.
