The Midwives War by Chrissie Walsh

Love To Last A Lifetime

The Midwives War by Chrissie Walsh is a powerful, heartfelt historical novel that I thoroughly enjoyed.

The action is set during World War II and also in 1969.

We see the devastating effects of war on lives. Some are cruelly cut short. Others cannot cope with loss. All lives are altered. Some have scars that cannot be seen – bitterness and the hardening of a heart after so much loss, leads a character to live a very different life than the one planned. War robs all of their innocence.

All the characters were realistic and likable. The leading lady was admirable. She kept her good heart pure, no matter what life threw at her. She knew that for healing, sometimes tough love was required. She also practiced sacrificial love.

Values during war altered. The motto carpe diem – seize the day – was often employed as tomorrow was not guaranteed.

Hard Times On Weaver Street by Chrissie Walsh

Constant & True

Hard Times On Weaver Street by Chrissie Walsh is a fabulous historical novel and the second book in the Weaver Street series. It can be read as a stand-alone.

I enjoyed catching up with familiar faces as the residents of Weaver Street journey through the 1920’s and 1930’s.

These are challenging decades as the residents who are recovering from World War I find themselves plunged into depression before war once more looms on the horizon.

All the women are strong, realistic and likable. They support each other throughout life’s changing seasons. They also welcome new faces. “There was more love in those shabby little houses in Lamb Lane than there ever had been in Heathcote Manor.” Money does not buy happiness.

There is no judging of situations as the women realise that there but for the grace of God. We all make mistakes and need love not judgement.

It is delightful to watch the children grow throughout the course of the book as we welcome the next generation of residents to occupy Weaver Street.

Welcome To Weaver Street by Chrissie Walsh

Community Spirit

Welcome To Weaver Street by Chrissie Walsh is a marvellous historical novel set during World War I and beyond in Liverpool.

The reader follows a newly married couple from Ireland as they land on the Liverpool docks in 1916. They are going to start a new life in England following the Easter Uprising in Ireland.

Residents of Weaver Street are a tight knit community and the couple receive a mixed welcome as personal history with the Irish colour’s some responses.

The leading lady has a warm personality, friendly nature and a kind heart which helps her to be accepted. She also has a core of resilience when life is hard. She is very much a modern woman of her time with an entrepreneurial spirit as she seeks to rise out of her roots of poverty.
