Always On My Mind by Beth Moran

Cherished, Loved, Cheered On

Always On My Mind by Beth Moran is the most beautiful contemporary novel that has warmed my heart and left me smiling.

I never wanted the book to end. The characters were more than just characters in a book – they were my friends and as such, I cared for their fates.

This is a book about love and forgiveness. There are many types of love within the novel – and the reader stands on the touchline, cheering them all on.

We see the love for a group of elderly people. Life seems to have forgotten that they were once young, and put them in a box marked ‘Elderly. Listen to Vera Lynn while tea dancing.’ They were once young, vibrant individuals and inside each one of them, nothing has changed. They still have hopes and dreams which are encouraged by the appearance of the young and bubbly lead character. There are moments that are absolutely hilarious – I don’t think I shall ever forget the make-over experience! Juxtaposed are moments of pathos where tissues are needed.

We see a character drowning in guilt and unforgiveness, who has a self-imposed exile on her life. “Punishing myself hadn’t changed anything.” Why is the face in the mirror so hard to forgive? We forgive others but are really tough on ourselves. A carefully worn mask hardly ever slips. We learn of the loving care given to her by an elderly woman several years earlier. “What I needed most was a place to take off the suffocating mask of acting as if I was fine and let the tears fall without having to explain.” We all need that one person who will sit quietly with us and just let us be ourselves. No words. No explanations. Just pure love. This love and bond with remain.

The Officer’s Wife by Catherine Law

Holding It All Together

The Officer’s Wife by Catherine Law is a powerful historical novel that spans a generation from 1932-1962, as Catherine Law captures a snapshot of history.

We see that there are pivotal moments that shape us – at the time we do not realise that this is a moment that will define a life. It is a time that we will return to and cling to because it brings happiness.

And there are lives that draw others in. They rescue the lost and lonely, creating a place of sanctuary within their hearts.

There are also physical sanctuaries of bricks and mortar – the place where we just know that we belong, as if we have spent a lifetime of searching.

Love appears where it chooses. We cannot always help where attraction lies. Kindness and good hearts will always draw others in.

His Fatal Legacy by Heather Atkinson

Chilling

His Fatal Legacy by Heather Atkinson is an historical novel that gripped me from the start. It is the third book in the Alardyce House series but can be read as a stand-alone.

The tale is set in Edinburgh in the late nineteenth century. It has elements of the Gothic tradition with large houses, dark nights, deserted alleyways and sinister characters. The tone is chilling as an air of menace appears.

Family is important. A mother’s love is fiercely protective, needing to uphold appearances no matter the cost. Dreadful secrets and suspicions arise but lips are sealed.

We witness nature versus nurture – are monsters made by their genes or a product of their environment? A character wrestles with the darkness within as he tries to focus on the light.

Ten Dates by Rachel Dove

Still Me

Ten Dates by Rachel Dove is the most beautiful contemporary novel that warmed my heart and soul.

The story is told in the third person from two alternating points of view. The reader becomes well acquainted with the two lead characters. Both of which are easy to empathise with.

Love completely radiates from the pages – a mind recovering from a coma has forgotten much, but a heart still recognizes feelings of love. This is a love to last a lifetime. This is a love so huge, it fears hurting another. This is a love that denies self and always puts another first. This is a beautiful love.

Rachel Dove has written a novel that assaults your emotions. The raw emotion of love is palpable. The reader wafts alongside the characters as we long to know – what will happen at the end of ten dates?
