The Silver Sword by Ian Serrailler is a powerful children’s historical classic written in 1956. It is a book that must be read so that the past is not forgotten.

The novel is set during World War II in occupied Europe, beginning in Warsaw. It follows the fortunes of a group of children with indomitable spirits who have to use their wits to survive as they travel to find family. They have a strong will and a hope that they will succeed. The small group show kindness for other lost children, and they receive kindness back. The majority of the novel follows the children but to set the scene the novel opens with what happened to their father. Nazi occupied Europe was a terrible place to be. It needed courage and a desire to live in order to have a chance of surviving.

Building A Family by Jennifer Slattery is a delightful Christian contemporary novel that will leave you smiling.

The novel revolves around two small children in need of stable parenting. They have been abandoned by their parents but have other relatives wanting to parent them. There is so much love surrounding them. This reminds the reader that God surrounds us with an unconditional love and He longs to adopt us into His family.

There are the difficult topics of alcohol and drug abuse. People need help to heal. They also need to want to get better. We all deserve a second chance to have a fresh beginning.

59 Memory Lane by Celia Anderson is a delightful contemporary novel about community. It is a wonderful warm read.

There is an eclectic mix of characters ranging from age six to one hundred and ten. They all inhabit a small Cornish village and we witness the ups and downs of village life. Needs are met as people look out for others. The down side is the gossip machine works overtime – your business is not your own.

A series of letters link top past events as the reader hears of a mystery to solve.

The novel celebrates friendship and kindness – some friendships are new, others are decades old. Life is just too short to hold on to grudges.
