Then There’s Trust by Susan Gray

Live, Love, Loss

Then There’s Trust by Susan Gray is a powerful historical novel that I loved. It is the third book in the Blossoming series but can be read as a stand-alone.

Once more the reader joins familiar faces in a familiar location, a small village near Durham in the North East. As we catch up, it is now the 1950’s and there are still fall-outs from World War II as a character is returning from two years National Service.

The 1950’s was a time of change. People were still adapting to peacetime. We join a large, extended family as they navigate life, love and loss.

There is the painful topic of stillbirth. A character’s hopes and dreams died with their baby. At times like this it is hard to trust that God is good even when circumstances aren’t. “Trust is a confident expectation of something. There are seasons in life when we are asked to trust.” Trusting is hard when life sucks but we have to trust that God is good.

Loss is painful. “Why did she have to leave me when I needed her so much?” is said after the stillbirth. A wife and mother unexpectedly departs, leaving a huge hole in her family. “You don’t know at that point it’s going to be the last occasion. Bring your memories to mind.” We need to cherish our loved ones because we do not know when lives will end. Make memories, as one day you will need them to keep you warm.

Hope On Hope by Susan Gray

Love Wins

Hope On Hope by Susan Gray is the most charming historical novel that I absolutely adored.

The novel is mainly set in the north west of England in 1946. War is over but families are still feeling the effects. There are empty spaces around tables.

We also cross the channel to France to re-connect with family as the war years kept families apart.

War brings secrets. Even after it has ended, a character keeps quiet about her role in the resistance, for fear of reprisals. “She played her part – a small but vital part.”

For so long, fear ruled in even the bravest of hearts, so it isn’t surprising that a character is still cautious. “How long would it take for the memories to fade and the fear to subside?” One never knows just how brave one is until called upon to act without thought to personal safety. “War makes people inventive. It causes them to step outside their comfortable places.”

We see the importance of having hope. “Hope is my lifeline.” Clinging to hope, even in the bleakest of circumstances means a character declares “hope helps me to move forward.” Without hope, the people perish. She “trained herself to never lose hope. Hope was her anchor.”

Blossoming Of Truth by Susan Gray

Love Never Gives Up

Blossoming Of Truth by Susan Gray is a simply marvellous historical novel that I just could not put down.

The story is set in the mid 1920’s in North East England and surrounds the scripture 1 Corinthians 13.

We witness the steadfast love that perseveres and never gives up. A love that began in childhood, a love within a family – both are covered by the novel.

There is the importance of bringing the truth into the light. Lives need the foundation of truth in order to be successful. Lies will only destroy.

We see the fragility of life. How things can change within an instant. Loss consumes. Sometimes loss makes people behave in less than honorable ways.

Forgiveness is important. Forgiveness is a process. Where there has been much hurt, time is needed before forgiveness can be given.

Not everyone is quite who they appear to be. Characters have a mystery to solve. It requires some careful amateur sleuthing.
