King Of Hearts by Mark Stibbe

Choose Love

King Of Hearts by Mark Stibbe is a contemporary Christian tale of love and loss, fear and friendship, guilt and forgiveness. It reminded me of the prodigal son as there is a character who forgives and loves without judgement, one who is angry and hurt and another who needs to come home. The tale shows that no matter how far we fall, we are never out of reach of the Father’s love.

The world is a dangerous place. Discontentment is a terrible lure, once we fall into its hands, life will spiral downwards. When we chase after money and the pleasures of the world, we have lost our focus on what is really important. Money and pleasures of the flesh always attract the wrong sort of attention. We need to be aware of where our eyes look because our heart will follow.

The richest people in the novel are not those with the most money but those with the biggest hearts. In worldly terms the richest people appear to be those who are dirt poor, but it is them who look out for others. The reader sees a sacrificial love as characters show they are the hands and feet, the eyes and ears of Jesus. I was reminded of the words of missionary Jim Elliot as I read, “he is no fool who gives what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose.”

The Night I Met Father Christmas by Ben Miller

To Be Enjoyed By All

The Night I Met Father Christmas by Ben Miller is an absolutely charming children’s Christmas tale. It deserves to be read every year as part of a new festive tradition that keeps the magic alive.

This is a beautiful book that has its roots in A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens but with a selfish elf as the lead character. It is a tale that will be enjoyed whether you are nine or ninety! The framework is familiar but with Ben Miller’s unique take on a familiar tale.

There are lessons for us all to learn about being generous with our time and our talents. Life may give us hard knocks but we must not harden our hearts.

I absolutely loved this book. The tale is magical and there are some stunningly beautiful black and white illustrations to accompany it.

A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum

Heart-Wrenching

A Woman Is No Man by Etaf Rum is a heart wrenching contemporary novel. It is set in 1990 moving forwards, and 2008, exploring the role of women in today’s society.

The role of women is further complicated by the fact that we are looking at a mother and her daughter who are both Arab and American and struggling to find where they belong. Their unique cultures are at war with each other. “She had lived her entire life straddled between two cultures.” Their mother/grandmother wants them to remain true to their heritage but the women want something more.

“Marriage, motherhood – that is a woman’s only worth.” This is a horrifying sentence to the modern reader. Women are worth so much more but criticised for aiming higher in the book. The result is frustration for both the reader and the characters.

A woman’s worth is linked to her husband. He can do as he likes with her, she is his property. If he wants to abuse her, it’s okay so long as she disguises the bruises with make-up. There are some truly shocking to read scenes. The abuse is sanctioned traditionally by both males and females.

The Snowman by Michael Morpurgo

Magical

The Snowman by Michael Morpurgo is a classic re-telling of Raymond Briggs timeless book.

Michael Morpurgo has perfectly captured the magical atmosphere of The Snowman as he gives a voice to the original. Michael Morpurgo has put into words what my imagination has uttered over the years. He has taken a familiar tale and added some extra special touches.
