Tate by Susan May Warren

Just Show Up

Tate by Susan May Warren is a marvelous Christian contemporary romantic suspense. It is the second book in the Montana Marshalls series but can be read as a stand-alone.

Domestic terrorism is at the height of the novel. It is designed to upset the internal workings of America and spread fear and distrust. We cannot always be living in fear, we need to trust that God has got this. “Stop living in fear that it’s all going to crumble.”

The reader enters the world of bodyguards. We see the dedication, bravery and resilience needed to protect others as bodyguards put themselves in the line of fire. “He doesn’t know the word quit.”

We all have a past. Unless we deal with our pasts, they will impact on our present and future. Serving soldiers have traumatic pasts that surface in the form of dreams and flashbacks as they re-live what they cannot change.

There is the theme of loss. “Grief… holds us hostage.” Grief consumes. It never goes away. There is survivor’s guilt. “I’m the other one. The one who lived.” We should not feel guilty because we are alive. We need to look back at our memories and not beat ourselves up because we live.

Some characters work to be loved and accepted, not realising that they are loved and accepted already. This has parallels with God… we do not need to work our way into His love, He already loves us. There is nothing we can do to earn His love. Equally there is nothing we can do to lose His love. We need to “Just let… God… love me.”

The reader enters the cut and thrust of American politics. (As an aside, this is particularly relevant to me as I read at the end of May 2019 as British politics is a mess). We see a manipulative and cut throat world.

In contrast to the political scene is the world on the family ranch in Montana. Here, love and acceptance are the order of the day.

I really enjoyed Tate. I was totally engrossed, as I always am when I enter the world of one of Susan May Warren’s novels. It is first rate. I cannot wait to read more in this series.

I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

What will it cost this bodyguard to save the woman he loves?

Bodyguard, Tate Marshall, has always been the family troublemaker. Maybe it’s his impulsive propensity to get into the middle of problems that don’t belong to him. But once in, he can’t stop himself from trying to solve them and that includes his recent dilemma. He’s in love with the woman he’s supposed to protect, the beautiful Gloria, “Glo” Jackson, daughter of US Senator and presidential hopeful Reba Jackson. A member of the country band, the Yankee Belles, Glo was targeted in a recent terrorist attack designed to deter her mother from running.

Glo is as stubborn as her mother, and Glo isn’t about to hide from threats, at least the kind that won’t cost her heart. Because she’s already paid a terrible price for the war on terror, and she can’t let herself love a man who might die, especially because of her.

As the campaign heats up and the threats deepen, so does the attraction between Tate and Glo. But when they’re discovered, and Tate is fired, what will he do to protect the woman he loves?
And what will Glo do to keep from losing another man to the costs of war?

The gripping second installment of the Marshall Family series.
