The Ambassador’s Daughter by Pam Jenoff

Educating And Entertaining

The Ambassador’s Daughter by Pam Jenoff is a marvellous historical novel that captures the atmosphere in post war Paris 1918 – 1919. It is a time of turmoil, with lives still reeling from the losses in war.

Paris is a cosmopolitan city but wearing a German uniform is still greeted with hostility. War has hardened hearts. War designed by politicians has disrupted and devastated ordinary lives. All over Europe and beyond, mothers of all nations are grieving sons, husbands and fathers – sacrificed as cannon fodder on the battlefields of Europe.

The novel surrounds the peace treaty. Ideally it will be “Peace without blame.” The Treaty Of Versailles was a disaster, with the German delegation being excluded from the negotiations. The terms were dictated to them. Those who signed the treaty were referred to as the November criminals. The so called peace treaty paved the way for World War II.

The Girls Best Buddies by Gloria Grossi

Sound Advice

The Girls Best Buddies by Gloria Grossi is a Christian self help book designed to help teenage girls navigate their way through life. There is much sound advice backed up with scripture, stories and personal references.

Gloria Grossi discusses the importance of identity. Our identity is not in our name or job, our identity is found in God. We are who He says we are.

We need to know God’s Word so we can stand on it at all times. Life distracts us. The enemy distracts us. We need to keep focused on God and maintain and build our faith.

With so many choices, we need to have God as our moral compass. If what we see, hear or do does not line up with God’s Word, it is not from God. God’s advice is the same yesterday, today, forever.

Midnight Clear by Autumn Macarthur

The Best Christmas Present Ever

Midnight Clear by Autumn Macarthur is the most delightful contemporary Christian romance. It is the third book in the Huckleberry Lake series. It will warm your heart whilst simultaneously tugging at your heartstrings. You will be smiling one minute and wiping tears the next. This story is one of great joy and even greater pain.

The reader is drawn into the story from the start. From teasers we know something truly awful happened but we question what, why and when.

The story is an exploration of grief. Grief will either draw us to or from God. One character presses into God, they “need to lean on God’s support harder than usual for a while.” This character chooses to trust God in the midst of pain. “He trusted the Lord planned for his good, no matter what.”
