Like Him by Julia Stevens

Powerful

Like Him by Julia Stevens is a powerful Christian nonfiction book that will aid your walk of faith. It is full of scripture, poems, prayers, sound biblical advice and the author’s personal experiences.

Julia Stevens writes in a very personable way, making Like Him accessible for all. She explains some of the biblical happenings and backgrounds. I particularly liked the meanings of names including those of Jesus.

We learn about the heart of God. “Our Father… cares about the little things that matter so much to us all.” Nothing is too small for the concern of God. If it matters to us, it matters to Him.

God desires us to come to Him, rest in Him and learn from Him. We are to live in faith and love which will push fear aside. We can all come to God just as we are because of the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. “You are qualified through the Cross of Jesus.” We merely need to say yes to God because Jesus has already paid for our sins on the cross.

When we know God, our bodies become His temples. “We are a sanctuary for Him to inhabit.” As such, we need to be aware of what we put into our bodies and how we treat them.

On Giant’s Shoulders by Patrick McElligott

Inspirational

On Giant’s Shoulders by Patrick McElligott is a true and inspiring account of a life lived for over thirty years as a missionary in Japan.

Patrick McElligott writes in a very personable style, with the result that the reader feels as if we are reading an account from a dear friend. We hear about the author’s poor beginnings in Deptford and about a Christ-filled, servant-hearted life in Japan.

We all have a God-shaped hole that nothing else can fill. “I set my heart seeking until I found.” God longs to be found by each and every one of us.

God has uniquely created us. “The Lord had not called me to copy others.” God has planted our own hopes, dreams and talents within us. We are called to follow our own paths and not the paths of others.

Nothing can be established without bathing it in prayer. We need to bring both our small and our large concerns to God. “She spoke to the Father as if He were right beside her.” Prayer is for our benefit, as we establish a relationship with God.

Utterly Amazed by Miriam Davis

Treasures In The Darkness

Utterly Amazed by Miriam Davis is a powerful book about the author’s life in and calling to Japan. What began as a two year placement in 1975 turned into forty two years of service until retirement called.

We witness the faithfulness of  Miriam Davis to the call of God, and also the faithfulness of God to Miriam Davis. We need to live lives so in tune with God that when He calls, we will hear Him. “Never forget that God is with you.”

Sometimes we cannot ‘feel’ God but “God was still there even when I could not sense Him.” There are times when God seems quiet but He is still working.

The author has a heart for Japan and for introducing people to Jesus. Sometimes the seeds she plants may not come to fruition for many years. Miriam Davis spreads the light and love of Jesus wherever she goes. “Christians are not called to stay home in comfort.”

To follow the calling of God often takes a step of faith. We step out, only seeing the first step but in due course and at just the right time, God will illuminate our path.
