The Medium And The Minister by Roger Straughan

Fascinating – But No One Really Knows

The Medium And The Minister by Roger Straughan is a fascinating book studying the afterlife. The author produces evidence and viewpoints from both points of view. Ultimately it is up to the reader to decide what we choose to believe as no one really knows what happens after we die.

Roger Straughan shows the emergence of spiritualism from the mid nineteenth century. It had supporters in the British Prime Minister Arthur Balfour and author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is interesting to read their findings.

During World War I many strange phenomena happened to grieving relatives and soldiers still serving in the trenches, who claim to have seen those already passed on, but at the time the relatives and soldiers had no knowledge of the deaths. It is amazing to read, totally fascinating and unexplainable.

A Mother’s Love by Lorna Farrell

Inspirational

A Mother’s Love by Lorna Farrell is a powerful true story of Bridie McGoldrick and her husband Mick who were able to forgive their son’s killer.

Bridie McGoldrick is inspirational. She forgave not in her strength but with the strength of Jesus. I actually remember the news reports of her son Michael’s murder in 1996. Bridie and Mick are an amazing couple. Following their son’s murder, they could have become bitter but they actually developed their hearts and eyes to the poor and vulnerable.

They chose to serve the poor in Romania, Malawi and Moldova via mission trips and fund raising back home in Ireland.

The couple modelled the love of Jesus everywhere they went and in everything they did. They were obedient to His calling to love others.

They’ll Never Read That by Tony Collins

A Fascinating Vocation

They’ll Never Read That by Tony Collins is a fascinating account of the author’s life in publishing.

The whole book is written in a very personable style enabling the reader to become acquainted with Tony Collins. It feels more like we are hearing from a dear friend rather than reading a book.

The world of publishing is full of ups and down, hits and misses. One has to be able to spot the next best seller. Tony Collins writes about the books that got away – and those that didn’t! – The Heavenly Man, Faith Like Potatoes, Alpha, Freedom In Christ to name but a few best sellers.

It is fascinating to note that some books that were best sellers in America failed to provide similar sales here in the UK. I was most surprised to learn that Janette Oke’s Love Comes Softly series failed to be a best seller in Britain – I have read all the books and watched all the movies and I love it.

The Report by Julie Thomas and Kristi Grigsby

Powerful Testimony And Faith

The Report by Julie Thomas and Kristi Grigsby is a powerful book detailing Julie Thomas’ journey through breast cancer. Her experiences show her unwavering faith in a God who is faithful and present.

We hear a little of Julie Thomas’ backstory before her cancer diagnosis. “The one person who never failed me, Jesus.” Through it all, Julie Thomas kept her focus on Jesus. She believed His promises and knew that He was good even when circumstances were not. As she fully surrendered to God, she experienced opportunities for her faith to grow.

There are many scriptures included in the book. There are scriptures to meditate on as we fix our eyes on Jesus and lift them from our diagnosis. The list is not exhaustive so you may well find that God speaks to you through different scriptures.

When facing cancer, as well as standing on the Word of God, we must do as the medical professionals recommend. As one of my pastors, Allison Evans says, it is miracles and medicine working together.
