Delia And The Drifter by Melody Carlson

Inheritance

Delia And The Drifter by Melody Carlson is a marvellous Christian historical novel and the first in the Westward To Home series.

The novel concerns family, inheritance and wealth. Family is more than just blood ties, family is those who love and care for us. Sometimes family casts us off, this is in direct contrast to our heavenly Father who has promised to never leave us nor forsake us.

Inheritance is more than just money. Inheritance is family traits passed down to us such as kindness and character. The richest person is not the one with the biggest bank balance but the one with the kindest heart.

We need to have correct priorities. “There’s more to life than gaining wealth.” Pursuing wealth to the exclusion of all else will often lead to a downfall in a character.

The characters were wonderfully drawn. The leading lady was very much a modern miss for 1884. “Why a woman needs so much education is beyond me.” She broke out of the mould that was constraining a woman to marriage to the highest bidder, regardless of age or love. She was not afraid to get her hands dirty. Her kindness and open hearted living was a breath of fresh air.

Delia And The Drifter was a delightful read. The series promises to be fabulous.

I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

More from Melody

I love historical stories about women. Particularly ones in the American frontier and old west. Probably because I grew up hearing pioneer stories from my grandparents, whose parents arrived in covered wagons. But contributions made by pioneering females is often overshadowed by their male counterparts. That’s why I enjoy researching and telling these fictional yet reality-based stories of women who lived and loved and did their part to settle the frontier. To me they are the unsung heroes of the West.
