Their Daring Hearts by Sharlene MacLaren

Following Your Calling

Their Daring Hearts by Sharlene MacLaren is a delightful Christian historical romance. It is the second book in the Forever Freedom series but can be read as a stand-alone.

Set at the height of the American Civil War, the reader sees the futility of war. “Both sides of this ugly war think they’re right.” There are no winners in war. Both sides have mothers losing sons. Children losing fathers. Civil war seems even more futile. Fighting over the issue of freedom, both sides are locked into war.

Spies appear in war. The novel explores this topic, as well as the issue of appearances and trying to live as someone else.

The novel is about duty. The call to do the right thing.

God is at the centre. We need to know where we will spend eternity, especially in times of war. “I ain’t good enough.” None of us will ever be ‘good enough’ for God but we don’t have to be. God gives us all the free gift of grace.

Sometimes we are called to stand on the side of God but against our earthly parents. It is important to listen to and heed His call.

The novel is a wonderful read. I loved the two main characters with their camaraderie and their love for God. They encouraged each other in life and complemented each other.

There were many great lessons to be learnt in the novel. I want to leave you with my favourite quote:

“God’s not looking for perfect people. He’s looking for willing ones.”

A perfectly wonderful read.

I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

  1. I read this earlier and didn’t have a chance to comment. I enjoyed reading your review. I’m not familiar with this author, but will check her out since you said it’s a “perfectly wonderful read”.
