The Beloved Hope Chest by Amy Clipston

Never Give Up

The Beloved Hope Chest by Amy Clipston is a heartfelt Amish novel. It is the fourth book in the Amish Heirloom series but can be read as a stand-alone. I thoroughly enjoyed the novel which tugged at my emotions.

The Beloved Hope Chest is a study of grief. A grief that is raw. A grief that sinks into the soul and consumes. “No one gives us instructions on how to handle grief.” Everyone has to work through their own grief, in their own way and in their own time. “She was drowning in grief.” Grief may threaten to capsize. There seems no way out.

The novel shows that though we may feel alone, we are not alone. We may not feel Him but God walks alongside us in our grief and will never leave us to face it alone.

Alice’s Notions by Tamera Lynn Kraft

Trust Me

Alice’s Notions by Tamera Lynn Kraft is a historical thriller which I loved. Cleverly constructed, small town America merges with the world of espionage and interspersed with references to actors, actresses and films of the time, all of which captures and holds the reader’s attention.

Set against the backdrop of World War II, America in 1946 is still in a state of high alert. Fear is a driving force – fear of Nazi sympathisers, fear of anyone German, fear of Communists. Fear motivates others to be both suspicious and prejudiced. “Prejudices from the war run deep.”

Linked to the theme of fear is that of trust. Who does one trust? Who can one trust? Are friends and neighbours all they appear to be? What about strangers? Immerse yourself in Alice’s Notions to reveal the answers.

World Of The Innocent by Nadine C Keels

Awakening

World Of The Innocent by Nadine C Keels is a Christian contemporary YA novel about awakening – an awakening to the world around us, to talents and to love. I got completely engrossed in it, so much so that I literally gasped out loud at one point.

Nadine Keels writes with sensitivity, with knowledge and with love. The novel is about love that never dies – the great love of God for His children. And about the love of friends and a blossoming young love. The story is beautifully written.

We need to tell people about Jesus, or how will they know? “People listen because you have something to say.” We do not need to be loud. It’s about the message not the volume.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty

The Truth Will Set You Free

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty is both a powerful and disturbing contemporary thriller which made for compulsive reading. Its focus was bullying, domestic abuse and the lies we tell ourselves every day. It was uncomfortable reading at times but life is not always nice and we do not see what goes on behind closed doors.

Big Little Lies had a superb technique of teasing the reader as each chapter consisted of both present day police interview snippets and a narrative moving forward from six months earlier. Try as I might, I could not guess what had happened or to whom. My scenario was completely wrong. Liane Moriarty teased and tempted the reader by revealing snippets bit by bit. To say I was surprised at the outcome, is an understatement.
