The action is present day and in 1814 as an old house unites the characters.
The reader is educated in the customs of the day. Children’s and women’s rights did not exist. The poor knew their place in society as mixing between the classes was actively discouraged. Life was hard and children were literally worked to death. 1814 saw society dominated by rich males.Continue reading
