The Magic Of Mister Mishkins by Samantha Mattocks is a beautiful contemporary offering for children aged six years and over. It is the second book in The Magical Mister Mishkins series but can be read as a stand-alone.
The story surrounds Mister Mishkins and the many cats who live with him in his apothecary. Mister Mishkins is part Maine Coon, suffering from a common complaint of hip dysplasia. He is a caring cat who knows exactly what people want when they appear at his shop.
The book is about helping those in need. “Mosaic Street, and Mister Mishkins Apothecary was only ever found by those who needed their fears calmed or worries banished.” It is mainly children who come to Mister Mishkin’s door. For each child, there is a cat waiting to take them on an adventure and calm their fears. We see the lonely; the hurting; the frustrated; those with a fear of spiders or heights. With the help of a cat, children face their fears and overcome them, being able to live in freedom.
The story has a moral – we are all different and facing different fears, and we all need help, love, and compassion.
Beautifully illustrated by Gerda Smit, the cats come to life. The illustrations are simple but beautiful, and provide starting points for discussions with our children.
Whatever your age, The Magic Of Mister Mishkins is sure to appeal. It would make the perfect addition to any child’s personal library. It would be perfect to read to early years children.

Author Bio –
Samantha has spent her whole life being happily owned by cats. While she and her family have had ‘family cats’, Samantha has always had her own special feline companion – Minski, Minski II, Merlin Cat, and now Mishkins. Because as you know by now, Mister Mishkins is real, as are all the cats and some of the children in the Apothecary!
Samantha lives in sunny south Norfolk with Mishkins and the rest of her family. A graduate of York University, Samantha is an award-winning journalist and author. She owns The Arabian Magazine, a beautiful publication that celebrates the Arabian horse, and she also appeared on MasterChef UK in 2019.
The Magic of Mister Mishkins is her sixth book.
