To Be Called Mary by Kate Hiller

Redeemed

To Be Called Mary by Kate Hiller is a Christian historical novel set between 1900 – 1910. The action alternates backwards and forwards.

A terrible lynching viewed in the character’s youth colours the whole of her life. Feelings of horror and guilt for keeping silent dominate a life every waking moment. Today we would diagnose PTSD. It is a life frozen in time.

This links to the theme of forgiveness. We need to forgive ourselves and others. “I could follow that root of bitterness still deeper.” If bitterness takes hold, it is hard to shake it off. We must forgive.

Feelings of loneliness and isolation are explored within the novel.

There is a peace that passes understanding. We can even experience this peace in times of great trouble. It is not an elusive peace but available to all who truly believe and trust in Jesus.

Names are important. There are often connotations attached to names. The reader is reminded that we can all have a new beginning and a new name in Jesus.

To Be Called Mary is an emotional read, grounded in God and one that I enjoyed.

I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
