Hearthland Vol 1 by Chautona Havig

Warm, Witty And Wonderful

Hearthland part 1-6 by Chautona Havig is a delightful Christian contemporary story with a wonderful, warm community feel to it.

Life is for living. “You need to go where your soul can be still and know God.” Too many of us are in the rat race. We need to make time for life and for God. “I need to remember the sounds of a baby’s giggle.” We need to slow down and live the life around us and not keep chasing the next thing.

We are never too old for second chances, dreams and new beginnings. If we are still breathing, then God’s not finished with us yet.

Knowing God takes time and effort like any relationship. We need to make space in our lives for Him. “Am I to learn that the whole ‘stillness’ thing?… to finally grasp… what it means to know that You are God?” He longs for a relationship with us and deserves our conversation.

Prayer is important. Even if people do not believe, others can stand in the gap. “I know you’re not on friendly terms with Jesus, but… someone out there cares enough to talk to Him for you.” God believes in us, even when we don’t believe in Him.

The novel is about an inheritance. An inheritance is not necessarily about money. The inheritance in the novel is about a way of life.

The whole book is about sustainable community living. It is about sharing what we have with others and being responsible for the earth. We need to take care of God’s resources and watch our carbon footprint.

There is the plight of the homeless in the novel, focusing down in on one girl. People wrongly assume homelessness is a choice but “we all have one thing in common… we’re people… and most of us don’t want to be homeless.” The homeless need help and they need hope. They do not want our pity. They want to be seen and heard and loved. However hard their life is on the streets, sometimes it’s better than what they left behind. “For some of us, the streets are our second chance.”

The characters were wonderful. There were some very light hearted moments that had me laughing out loud. I could empathise with the main character talking to himself… as I do that! The community feel really made the reader feel included. I shed a tear too.

As an avid reader of Chautona Havig’s novels, I loved having references to another of her characters, Alexa Hartfield, as it made the book feel very familiar.

Hearthland was a fabulous novel, warm, witty and wonderful. I do so love Chautona Havig’s novels.

I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
