Why I Hate Green Beans by Lincee Ray

Refreshingly Honest

Why I Hate Green Beans by Lincee Ray is a collection of observations on life. Lincee Ray is honest, insightful and witty. The reader laughs and cries as we experience life with her. Lincee Ray recognises we need to “embrace the days when we aren’t feeling our best selves.” We need to seize the day.

The media puts pressure on women to look ‘perfect.’ Their idea of perfect seems to be stick thin with no blemishes. Every women seems to be under media pressure but we are “so much more than a number on a scale.” We need to be happy with the skin we are in and remember that we are created in the image of God. We are the daughters of the King.

I Was Just Wandering by Jeff Lucas

Amusing And Insightful

I Was Just Wandering by Jeff Lucas is a marvellous collection of Jeff Lucas’ musings on life. Split into thirty four short chapters, I chose to read one each night.

Jeff Lucas has remarkable insight into life. His observations, whilst unique to him, also have universal appeal. I certainly recognised myself (and others) at many times throughout the book.

Jeff Lucas is refreshingly honest about his Christian walk. No one is on a continual high and there are many valleys and even doubts. “My striding along with Jesus is occasionally punctuated by stop offs at smothering doubt, prayerless speechlessness and furtive little sprints into indiscipline. Sometimes I find myself in the wilderness of despair.”

Stranger No More by Annahita Parsan

When God Chooses You

Stranger No More by Annahita Parsan is a harrowing and powerful story of her life as a Muslim woman and her transformation into  a woman of God.

Growing up in Iran in the 1970’s Annahita Parsan remembers her granny who “prayed in fear to an angry God, not out of faith.” The country was in turmoil as the Shah was overthrown and replaced by Khomeini.

Two arranged marriages and two children before the age of twenty. Ironically her second marriage was for safety reasons but he turned out to be a monster who beat her. “It is normal for a woman to be beaten by her husband. That is how women learn.”

Annahita Parsan’s story is not an easy read – an abusive marriage, fleeing a regime and living in four countries. Annahita Parsans believed in an angry God who was punishing her. “I couldn’t escape the belief that God was angry and this was my punishment.” Her husband verbally and physically abused her, giving her the option, “You either live with me or you die.”

Divine Connection by Adah Dobele

A Life Lived With The Great I Am

Divine Connection by Adah Dobele is a wonderful book full of Godly truths and wisdom as to how to live a life connected to God. Everything Adah Dobele says is backed up by scripture. The book is punctuated with questions and suggestions as to how we can live a life in partnership with God. “All I needed to do was seek God.”

God is concerned with a relationship and not a ritual. He calls us not only to go to church on a Sunday but to be the church all week. “We must be the church seven days a week.” Our motive must always be to do the will of God. “God looks at our hearts, not the church we go to.” We cannot fool God. He looks at our inner most being.

We need to keep our eyes focussed on God. To be opened handed Christians. To receive and then go. There is a whole world that needs to hear about Jesus.
