My Nanny by Julia Wilson

Still Missed

Forty years ago today my Nanny died. I still miss her. She was my friend, my confident and she loved me unconditionally.

My Nanny was born towards the end of the nineteenth century, she was number seven of eight children. When she was just two years old, her mother died and my Nanny was given to her aunt and uncle to raise. As a teen she moved in to help her older sister raise her children. The first World War gave my Nanny the opportunity to work outside the house in a munitions factory. My Nanny married in the 1920’s and had my Uncle John and then my Dad. In November 1942 my Nanny became a widow looking after two young lads. At a time when there were no widows pensions, life must have been so hard.

Corrie ten Boom On Forgiveness by Julia Wilson

Powerful

We had a fantastic talk on Forgiveness by Jayne Sargeant, at our church Lifecentral this morning. It was very powerful and it got me thinking about the whole area of forgiveness.

One of my heroines is Dutch Christian Corrie ten Boom. She, along with her father Casper and her sister Betsie helped to hide many Jewish people during World War II in their home. They were eventually arrested. Her father died in prison while Betsie and Corrie were taken to Ravensbruck concentration camp. Here they were cruelly treated and Betsie died.

The Search For A Home by Beatrice Smith

So Brave And Faithful

The Search For Home by Beatrice Smith is the true account of a young girl’s early life as she and her family were caught up in the Rwandan genocide of 1994.

The book is not a comfortable read as one witnesses man’s inhumanity to man. The book does show the faithfulness of God and the faithfulness of a family. “I remember knowing from a young age that all we ever needed to do in a crisis and beyond was pray. And have confidence that God would always answer.” During times of turmoil God is the only steadfast one.

Beatrice Smith was just ten years old when the genocide began. She witnessed scenes that no one should ever see. She lost her home, her education and her country but she never lost sight of God and her faith in Him strengthened.

Lost And Found: Losing Religion, Finding Grace by Kendra Fletcher

Its’s All About Jesus

Lost And Found: Losing Religion, Finding Grace by Kendra Fletcher is a powerful little book exploring the difference between religion and relationship.

Religion presents us with rules. We try to work out our salvation. We focus so much on ourselves and our ‘doing’ that we lose sight of God. “We loved our religion…  more than we loved our Saviour.”

Relationship says it’s all about Jesus. It’s all about what Jesus has done. Our hope, our lives, everything is tied up in Jesus. He is the centre. “Only one thing matters: Jesus.”
