Jana’s Brightly Coloured Socks by Sally Fetouh

A Powerful Message

Jana’s Brightly Coloured Socks by Sally Fetouh is a perfectly lovely book for the under fives.

The story is a simple but memorable one that will appeal to all children – Jana shares her brightly coloured socks with all her classmates. This promotes the message that it is good to share what we have with others. Jana has a generous heart.

Jana also has Downs Syndrome. We see via the brightly coloured socks, the second message of the book, that it is all right to be different. The socks all have different patterns but they are still all socks. We all have different talents/looks etc but we are all people. As a former learning support assistant to teens, I absolutely love this book. I have worked with a teen with Downs Syndrome, and this book warms my heart. Everyone no matter how old or young, no matter there giftings, we all have something to contribute to life and we can all learn from each other.

The Really Radical Book For Kids by Champ Thornton

Educating & Entertaining

The Really Radical Book For Kids by Champ Thornton is a marvellous book for children aged eight years and over. It is a book looking at various aspects of the Christian life and the Bible to help our children grow their faith in God. I think it is a book that is relevant for any age especially if you are a new Christian.

This book is accessible for all. For young children, you will need to read it for them. To be honest, I recommend reading this book alongside your children so that you can discuss the content. It is a perfect book for Sunday schools and also for connect groups to work through.

The book is brightly coloured, making the pages inviting. We want to read and explore the content which is vast and rich.

We learn about prominent figures and how they lived good Christian lives – Pandita Ramabbai, Hannah More, Eric Liddell to name but a few. I was educated as I read.

The author tells us that the Bible is like a window – we look outside beyond the stories. It is like stained glass and we look into the stories. And it is like a mirror – we can see ourselves within the stories. All three concepts will help us to see God’s Word clearly.

The Mozart Question by Michael Morpurgo

Powerful

The Mozart Question by Michael Morpurgo is a powerful children’s novel. It is perfect for ages ten years and over.

This is a tale simply but powerfully told. It introduces the reader to the power of music, memories and the holocaust. It is written in such a way as to inform but not to scare children into having nightmares.

Music transports us through time and space. We hear a piece of music and are immediately back somewhere in time. When that place is a concentration camp, we know why certain music is avoided as it causes great pain.

Very Charming

Ellie-May And Her Toy Dragon, Ben by Genna Rowbotham is a very charming book for the under fives.

The story is written in rhyme with verses four lines long. There is a bouncy rhythm enabling children to join in once they have heard the tale a few times. They can anticipate the action.

All the book is beautifully illustrated. The drawings are simple but effective. Each page is packed full of detail, enabling you to talk it through with your children.

The dragon has a friendly face that will appeal to young children.
