Birdie by J.P. Rose

Love Is… Never Giving Up

Birdie by J P Rose is an inspiring historical children’s novel that I absolutely adored. It is suitable for ten years and over.

The novel is set in 1952 in a small Yorkshire mining village. The setting comes to life under the author’s descriptive pen. We can ‘see’ the hills and dales, the dry-stone walls and cottages, and we can ‘feel’ the heat and oppression of the mine.

The leading character is a young orphan called Birdie who has been in a children’s home all her life until aged eleven, Birdie’s great aunt decides to offer her a home. Birdie is a plucky young girl who doesn’t let life get her down. She does not realise she is viewed as ‘different’ until she goes to live with her aunt.

Birdie’s father was an American G.I. and her foster home was with other children with American G.I. fathers. On arriving in the mining village, Birdie receives discrimination because of her looks, even from her aunt, who did not know Birdie’s father. “She’d [Birdie} thought that having a family of her own would make her feel like she’d swallowed a ball of sunshine… she had a great big lead ball sitting in the base of her tummy.”

Birdie’s beautiful personality shines through. She makes her Great Uncle smile again [after he had lost his son in World War I]. This prompts her Great Aunt to say: “You’re a tonic, Birdie… like a breath of fresh air.” Birdie is “A medicine for sad hearts and souls.”

The Turnkey Of Highgate Cemetery by Allison Rushby

Unique, Exciting & Engaging

The Turnkey Of Highgate Cemetery by Allison Rushby is an entertaining children’s novel that I thoroughly enjoyed. It is perfect for ten years and over.

The action is set during World War II in London. We join a young girl who is deceased and who also looks after the dead in Highgate cemetery. She is the turnkey. She witnesses the destruction of London, and stumbles upon a deceased Nazi officer with evil intent.

There are battles between good and evil as the veil between ‘now’ and the afterlife grows thin.

Family is important. Family make a difference. We all want someone to love us.

The Magical Matcha Teashop by Natasha Bache

Power Of New Beginnings

The Magical Matcha Teashop by Natasha Bache is a very charming contemporary tale that I read in just two sittings.

The reader is delighted to step into the world of Lavender Hollow, a small village in England. With its’ independent businesses and no big chain stores, the reader experiences olde worlde charm.

At the heart of the book is the matcha teashop. Owner Yulli relocated from Osaka after his wife Mei died. Yulli is running from grief, but there is no escape. Locking up his heart and keeping busy has also prevented him from accessing beautiful memories.

Mei put life and love into her brews. She knew just what was needed. The teashop needs a new person to take over the reins.

Grace wants a new beginning as she has escaped a soulless relationship and returned home. As the matcha teashop opens its’ doors, Grace can ‘feel’ it talking to her.

When I’m With You by Rachel Hauck

The Heart Of The Father

When I’m With You by Rachel Hauck is the most delightful Christian contemporary novel that I adored. It is the first book in the Home To Hearts Bend series which promises to be fabulous.

Hearts Bend is the place where everyone knows your name. “Friends take care of friends in this town.” Where there are needs, they are met. The location feels familiar to readers of Rachel Hauck’s previous books as characters and locations have been met previously.

All the characters are wonderfully warm and welcoming. The reader really feels wrapped up in the tale as we receive a hug in a book.

We learn about what is really important – family. Friends. God. Love. “She [Granny] loved well.” We all need people to love us. Characters feel drawn back to Hearts Bend as it is the place that they call home.

A character has suffered from Epstein Barr Virus. “Broken things always needed love.” Her spirit doesn’t feel like she can love anyone for fear of passing on the Epstein Barr Virus – but God does not want us to live in fear. He wants us to trust His guiding and to live and love in freedom.
