The novel shows the importance of following our hopes and dreams. Dreams are no good if all we do is look at them. One needs to have the courage to make them happen. “She’d need the courage to walk away from everything… and step out with hopes.”

The theme of hope continues throughout the novel. There is hope not only in ourselves but in the goodness of others. Hope sees what one can become.

Linked in to the theme of hope is that of trust. There is trust that people, given the choice, will do the right thing. There is also trust in the circus animals, that they will behave in the way they have been trained.
